Aging and Independence Volunteers Nominated for Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame
FREDERICK, Md. – The Division of Aging and Independence has nominated two of its volunteers, Peggy Fessler and Joe Fessler for the 2026 Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, a statewide recognition honoring adults age 65 and older who have made exemplary contributions to society.
The Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame recognizes older adults across the state who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and made a lasting difference in their communities. This year, 25 nominees from eight Maryland counties were inducted during an October 15th ceremony at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville.
Since 2017, Peggy and Joe Fessler have dedicated countless hours to helping older adults in Frederick County through nutrition and food assistance programs operated by the Division of Aging and Independence. Peggy was nominated for her compassion, dedication, and commitment to serving others. Over the past eight years, Peggy has volunteered with Groceries for Seniors, a free monthly grocery distribution for adults aged 60 and older living in Frederick County, Meals on Wheels, delivering nutritious meals to homebound seniors, and Lunch Bunch, a congregate meal program that promotes nutrition, social connection, and independence. Known for her reliability and enthusiasm, Peggy helps create a welcoming environment wherever she serves.
“Peggy truly demonstrates exceptional dedication to service and compassion towards her fellow man, and it is for that reason that I can say without hesitation that there is no one more deserving of the Honor and Recognition of being selected for induction into the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame than Ms. Margaret Fessler,” said Edie Bradshaw-Key, Meal Specialist for Frederick County 50+ Community Centers.
Joe Fessler was nominated for his leadership, kindness, and willingness to go above and beyond for both volunteers and the people he serves. Since 2017, Joe has volunteered in numerous roles within the Division’s nutrition programs, including delivering meals to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels, supporting center participants through Lunch Bunch, and assisting with Groceries for Seniors. Joe is known for fostering a welcoming and collaborative environment and for building meaningful connections within the senior community.
“Beyond Joe’s leadership at Groceries for Seniors, his kindness, dedication and insight have made him a cherished member of both our volunteer teams but also as a member of the community at the Frederick Senior Center,” said Casi Chandler, Intake Specialist with Meals on Wheels. “Joe is well loved by the people he serves. He is incredibly personable, and his reliability and strong skills have made him an asset in many different situations.”
